I finally got out my Big Gun Canon DSLR, which has been sitting on the shelf for the two months I’ve been in Thailand. Shameful, really.
It seems I really needed the camera practice. Many of my photos were ruined by some sloppy focusing and misremembered technical settings. It turns out that, desperately needed practice aside, the Canon was hardly necessary at the Bangkok Motor Expo out at Muaeng Thong Thani for there was so little worth photographing.
I and two friends went to Impact Arena Exhibition Centre on Day 2. One has 16 years living in Thailand, the other about seven, and both are car fans and attended both local shows regularly. They were unimpressed by the vehicles and even less impressed by the usual girls that adorn all car show stages in Asia. I have to agree as much as I was looking at the girls instead of the autos.
I’m only publishing photos of one particularly pretty girl at one carmaker’s stand, the name of which escapes me and I cannot identify the maker through my images. The rest of the hostess model lineups, I’m afraid to say, were less than memorable.
I wonder what makes girls go for the stringy, lop-sided hair? I guess it’s the in-style, like those high-waisted shorts that many girls are wearing now. To me, nothing is more beautiful on a Thai girl than the long straight, black hair, like that of the girls at the BMW display. Interestingly, all the girls styles matched; in fact, they almost looked like clones. Up close, they were all quite different looking, of course.
I had a couple of pictures of fetching girls at the after-market stands, but that was early on in that day’s camera re-education. Many were quite off in exposure, focus and white balance. Er, um, maybe I should not have been out late the night before. Ahem . . . Or maybe I should just hang up the camera and stick to the point-and-shoot.
I have to agree with you that the model lineup was a little weak. I think they had to tone it down as it's essentially a family event and it fell right on the King's Birthday. The purpose is to sell cars, right? The women at the show back in April out in Bang Na were much better.
I took a fair amount of pics, but the batteries on my flash were dead so I was hampered a bit by shadows. I did get a couple of shots of Miss Thailand, though. Check out a few here:

I really am getting tired of seeing Thai women with bad nose jobs. One of my GFs recently had one and it is very disappointing for me as I thought she was quite alright before. Such is life in a "face" driven country I'm afraid.
Thanks for the blog entry. matt

I'm almost thinking of going out there again. I didn't see every stand so maybe I will find another gem like the girl at the top. And maybe I just might re-learn my camera and then some. Buddha knows I need the practice.
